Installation Of Silt Fence

Silt fence can be installed manually or using a mechanical installation plough attached to a bobcat, allowing for fast deployment at minimal cost. As part of an effective sediment and erosion control strategy, silt fencing is commonly used alongside measures such as silt basins and sediment traps.
Correct placement and ongoing inspection are critical to performance. Silt fence should be installed downslope of disturbed areas to intercept runoff, slow water flow, and allow sediment to settle before reaching stormwater systems.
For self-installation, best practice requires the fence to maintain a minimum height of 600 mm above ground. Stakes should be positioned at 2-metre intervals on the downslope side, with the lower edge of the fence trenched into the soil and backfilled to prevent undermining.
Trade Enviro can assist with supply, placement guidance, or full installation if required.
PRO TIP
Correct installation is critical for silt fence performance. The fence must be trenched into the ground – not laid on the surface – and secured with star pickets at 2-metre intervals. In high-load or heavy runoff areas, additional stakes or a double barrier may be required. Silt fence is most effective when used as part of a combined erosion and sediment control system, alongside products such as silt socks, biodegradable erosion matting, and other primary erosion controls. Using multiple controls together reduces pressure on any single barrier and improves overall site compliance.
